We produced coverage of all three days of the Isle of Wight Festival for the fourth year running, with headline acts the Rolling Stones, Muse, Keane, Kasabian, Snow Patrol and Groove Armada.

After the success of the previous three years’ coverage, Channel 4 commissioned CC-Lab to return to the Isle of Wight Festival and deliver 1×45’ show on Friday night and 2×90’ shows on Saturday and Sunday night, plus 1×30’ show for T4.

We set out to capture the spirit of the first festival of the summer with a combination of live performances, backstage interviews and documentary features shot around the festival site and out and about on the Island.

Live performances were directed by Matt Askem with nine HD cameras and three digibeta documentary crews shot packages directed by Kieran Evans. Each programme was turned around for broadcast that same night, with five onsite edit stations putting the shows together, for broadcast live-to-air via satellite. The producers were Frank Lampen and Celia Moore and the executive producers Jason Hocking and Justin Rees.

This year the challenge was increased by earlier transmission slots and longer programmes. On the final night of the Festival we had just half an hour from the end of the Stones encore until the show went on air.

All of the bands loved the shows plus they got our best audience figures yet with over two and a half million viewers tuning in over the weekend. The material is also being reversioned for international deliveries.
